A Solid Foundation

The story has been told of two men who were the sole survivors of a shipwreck. They were afloat on a life raft and after several days had given up any hope of rescue. Finally, one said to the other, “Do you think it would do any good to pray?” The other agreed that nothing could be lost by trying. Neither, however, had ever prayed. Finally, one recalled living next door to a church as a child. He had often heard their mid-week meetings through an open window. Bowing his head he began to pray, repeating his recollection of the words he had heard uttered in that church so many years ago. His fervent prayer began, “I-26, B-15, N-7. …”

We may smile at the naiveté of this man and at the fact that some churches know more about Bingo games than they do about Bible study or prayer.  The truth however, is that many churches have departed from the pattern of teaching the Bible and helping God’s people understand its relevant application to our lives.

In these present times, people are looking for answers.  They ask questions like: “What happens after I die?”, “What is going on in the Middle East?”, and, “Is the world coming to an end?”  All too often we look to man’s wisdom for answers instead of God’s.  We find ourselves wandering, lacking a solid foundation from which to build our lives and a safe harbor in which we can rest from the storm.

God’s Word, the Bible is that solid foundation that many do not realize they need.  Because of the massive amounts of manuscript evidence for the Old and New Testaments, we are assured that what we have in our hands is the accurate inspired Word of God.  Think about this for just a moment.  If God created the heavens and the earth (which position has plenty of evidence and is a more plausible position that the world came from nothing), then do you not think God has the ability to send us a message?  He does, and He has!

The Bible is the top selling book of all time, has the widest distribution of any publication and has been translated into more languages than any other document in the history of man.  To this day it is the number one bestseller.  The problem is that the truth contained in it contradicts the desires of our flesh and the methodology of the world causing us to confront the real issue.  We have been separated from God, we have not been able to meet His standards, we have broken His commandments willfully, and we are in trouble.  The Bible also contains the remedy and the solution.

The starting place for getting out of our mess is Jesus.  God sent His only Son Jesus so that whoever believes on Him would not perish for falling short of God’s standard, but have forgiveness of sins as well as everlasting life.  Jesus died on the Cross, taking the penalty that we deserved, so that we could accept that payment and enjoy an authentic relationship with God.

If you do not have a relationship with God today, then you are not on a solid foundation.  I encourage you to click KNOW GOD on the front page of our website to understand what you must do to know God, have your sins forgiven and be free of the guilt and shame you now struggle with.  Salvation is a free gift but you have to understand you need it and then accept it.

If you do have a relationship with God, perhaps it is time to take inventory and evaluate your relationship with Him.  Is your life pleasing to God?  Are you representing to others what it looks like to be a citizen of heaven or a citizen of the world?  Connect with Him today, confess and repent of sin so that you may be able to stand on the promise of God that the Apostle Paul stated to Timothy:

“Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: "The Lord knows those who are His," and, "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity." (2Ti 2:19)

Hearing God’s Words and applying God’s principals, is the only way God has provided for us to weather the storm and have a solid foundation into eternity.  This world is passing away, but the Word of God, His promises and truths, will never be chained, become archaic, pass away, change or be mitigated in any way.  God’s Word will stand forever.  That is a solid foundation!
